Reality Check

"I say beware of all enterprises that require new clothes and not a new wearer of the clothes.”

I just spent my morning on Pinterest looking at outfit ideas for how to look semi presentable after having a baby... Then I saw this

My goodness, people! I'm having a freaking baby!!! A life! A perfect little girl that I get to mother and love until the end of my days and I am spending hours worrying about how to dress after she's born?! Madness.

So thankful for the words of this sweet mama this morning. So so thankful.

The Strangest Inspiration

Today, I made banana bread, did laundry and finally picked a pediatrician for Cana when she's born. That all took me until noon... Still hours before Frankie would be home from work! Being home alone, waiting for this baby girl to arrive, is brutal and finding ways to keep busy is getting difficult. Just as I was about to start my fourth episode of the ever so trashy, Gossip Girl on netflix, I decided that maybe there was a better way I could spend my afternoon.

I turned on some Audrey Assad (always my go to inspiration music), and just sat. I thought about reading one of the many amazing books that are collecting dust on my bookshelf. I opened my Bible, read a bit, then closed it. I thought about the happenings of the world right now: destruction, death, confusion. Then I sat some more. Just listening to the beautiful sounds of a woman who is about as blessed as they come when it comes to vocal cords.

Nothing was working. I couldn't sink into any type of good prayer or thought that held me for than a minute or two...

I got restless and so I went into the nursery. I looked at Cana's bookshelf and picked out one of her "Jesus books" randomly. I started flipping through the pages of the literary gold that is "Gods promises for Kids" and stumbled upon some of the most cheesy, yet true and adorable, words.

Various bible verses dotted the pages, alongside pictures of cartoon cats, trees, butterflies and homes. The best part though? Phrases that talked about the bible verse in the most perfect rhymes!

"Jesus wants to live in my heart. So I will say, "okay, come in." That's my part!"

Probably the best sentence ever! (Oh and someone remind me to get into writing children's books... I could totally do that!)

But really though, how awesome and simple does that sound. Is it really that easy? Sometimes, especially on days like today, when I find myself just sitting, I think it's so hard to let God in and open myself up to some good prayer. In reality though, this cheesy little book has it absolutely correct. "Okay, come in" is all I really need to say. It's all God wants from me as I sit. That is my part, He will take over from there.

So here's to you, little book! You've accomplished something today that I'm sure you never thought you do: inspire a grown woman to open her heart to the Lord in the simplest of ways. Bravo!

Whaley Cute Nursery Tour: on the cheap!

One of the first things I did when we found out we were pregnant was dream up the most perfect nursery! My Pinterest was filled with wall decor and crib bedding ideas. However, once I did my research a little more, I found that nurseries can quickly cost a fortune! Definitely not something I was ok with. Being on a tight budget (and just a frugal person in general), I was determined to create the most beautiful nursery for little to no money! Crafting, repurposing, gifts and clearance sales helped make my dream nursery a reality and I'm proud to say we personally spent less than $100 on the entire room!

Now, without further ado: Cana Marie's Whaley Cute Nursery!

We decided to go pretty neutral with the nursery and all major baby items, in case our next babe is a a handsome fella (plus, this mama doesn't really enjoy pink and purple all over the place). So we began with a grey and white base theme and added touches of teal blue and coral pink.

Of course, our girl needs a crib! We were blessed to receive this gorgeous, white crib from my parents, and I love it! Although we plan on having Cana in our room for at least the first few weeks, she will eventually transition into her crib where I'm sure she'll enjoy her grey and white chevron sheets, handmade crib skirt (from my mom), and snuggle blanket from her auntie Coley!
Lastly, the rug we already had from ikea, but it's still being sold there for like $20! Such a good deal!

Forgive the pile of hospital bags, at least we are prepared, right? Next to the crib is the most cozy chair on earth! We were gifted this glider by Frankie's mom and boy am I glad I'll have something comfortable to nurse in! We put the chair in front of the bathroom door, because frankly, it wouldn't fit anywhere else and what newborn needs to use the potty?! The bathroom can be accessed from the hallway too, so we aren't just wasting it, I promise!

Finally, every girl needs a crucifix, Mary picture and holy family statue in her room, right? I found the shelf at Ross a few years ago and painted it grey and blue to match the nursery colors. The cute whale garlands were made from scrapbook paper by my awesome friend Raquel for the baby shower! So glad I could reuse them here!

Opposite from the crib is this awesome trundle bed that Frankie's mom gave us! She wasn't using it, so I figured we could put it in the baby's room to have a place to lay down if needed, but we can also have guests over too! I'm planning on getting more pillows to make it look more like a day bed, but for now these few pillows we had laying around work great (especially the little whale pillow from Raquel)!
The mirror above the bed is something I've had since high school and I simply added more garland and pinwheels from the baby shower.
I found these awesome curtains at Ross for $15! They're not blackout curtains, but if it becomes an issue, I will probably put some black fabric on the back of them.

We are blessed to have a walk in closet in both bedrooms in our apartment. Since the closet is so large, we put the dresser/changing table in there. This was my dresser (from ikea) in high school and college, and it's the perfect fit for a changing pad! In the drawers, I bought some divider bins from ikea for $8 and they're perfect for keeping diapers, creams, socks, and other mini goodies organized! We are going to start with disposable diapers but soon move to cloth, hence both being in the drawer.
For more organization, we were gifted these awesome sizing tags by Frankie's step-mom! They definitely help keep her adorable outfits in order. I also reused this hanging shoe rack from ikea (another item I've had for ages) to store various things like pants and extra wipes.

Also in the closet: dollar store bins on the upper shelf for extra storage.
A large, lace covered cork board leftover from our wedding that I will hang on the wall to hold all of Cana's cute headbands and bows!
Oh and daddy's golf clubs hiding in the corner... Maybe she'll be inspired by them and become a golf pro one day!

A simple over the door hook is perfect for hanging extra diaper bags, little coats and anything else we might eventually need! (From big lots, two years ago)

This was my first craft for the nursery! I love having her monogram above her crib as a focal point in the room. I painted some basic wooden letters from hobby lobby and added a little paper whale. Probably cost me under $20 for all the supplies!

Of course a Whaley cute mobile was needed too! Once again, my crafty friend Raquel helped me out with this gem. We made little felt whales and hot glued them to an embroidery hoop with some ribbon. Raquel's mom also had a little sound box laying around, so we added it at the top for some extra nursery entertainment! In total, the mobile took about two hours to make and cost no more than $15 for supplies!

Lastly, right by the door and trundle bed is a $20 bookshelf from target that I've had for a few years. It's perfect for holding a basket of blankets, books, the sound machine and currently also holds our video monitor and humidifier. However, with two teacher parents, I foresee this eventually turning into a book-only shelf! She's already got a ton of great reads!

And there it is! The cheapest nursery you will ever find! We are so blessed to have such awesome and supportive family and friends who helped us make a perfect little space for our sweet girl!
Now we just have to wait for her to arrive so she can test it all out!
